My original question was:

Thanks to all of you who responded. I decided to ask my supervisor
directly what his expectations were with respect to authorship. His
reply was that all he would ask of me is that one of the papers stemming
from my thesis research have his name on it. He feels strongly that
it's important for the student to publish independently, assuming, of
course, that the student did all the work (that means original research,
not just the mechanics of cranking through a subset of the supervisor's
research), which is true in this case. On the other hand, the realities
of grants these days require that the grantee publish.

I think that his is quite a fair solution.

The end of the tale is that I offered him co-authorship on the part of
my research that is of most interest to him, and I'm forging ahead with
sole authorship on the part which is currently of most interest to me.
