A mystery piece of aparatus

Hi everyone!

I was given (I am not quite sure why) a rather interesting piece of
equipment called a "Gabridge Chamber/Dish". It looks like something I
could modify to do some experiments I want to do (gad- does that sound
like I am turning into an engineer or what?) but I would really like to
know how it was meant to work in the first place.

The thing that is puzzling me is that it seems to be meant for some sort
of tissue culture experiment. There is discussion of
hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces and their effect on cell attachment and
when I looked it up on the web there were Yahoo pulled up lots of plant
tissue culture papers. What seems odd, is that when assembled according to
the directions, there seems to be no "container", just a bit of glass
positioned between a metal plate and a teflon plate. Doesn't seem like it
is a good place for sterility.

Could someone enlighten this poor microbiologist as to the proper use of
this thing?

Thanks!
Linnea
