Possibly when research institutions decided that getting funding was more
important than the research being done or the training being
accomplished. The push for dollars has driven a wedge between those who
believe in scientific curiousity and training and those who strive
primarily for the reognition regardless of the field. The scientific
community has both types in abundance, but the curious are being pushed to
the sidelines because too often the subject of their curiousity is not
considered valuable, i.e. fundable, any longer.

Reviewers of grants and papers increasingly are in the camp of those
excessively pushing the relevance of scientific research.
