passing the defense

Hello all,

I was hoping for a little free advice from those who have passed their PhD
defense and/or have sat on examination committees.

How important is the oral part of the exam? What qualities do you look for
in the exam that convinces you that the candidate should pass? What
qualities would convince you that the candidate should fail?
