I am a undergrad student in biology right now, and only about a year or two
ago became aware that there were any gender inequality issues left. (this
through a 'gender issues in science' class I took to fill out SOC
requirements) I subscribed to this group about a year ago and have followed
it with varying degrees of interest since. The discussions have been very
helpful to me, as my friends and I are rarely exposed to points of view from
women in the field. (Or any women, really, in any sort of mentorship
capacity - the ratio of undergrad guys to girls at my particular school is
3:1, and among the faculty (who serve as our advisors) it's much worse.)
So, um, I guess that's the who and why. :-)
