I'm yet another lurker. I am a librarian at
an academic biomedical library. Women are certainly
NOT the minority in my profession, but I interact daily
with all sorts of life-sciences undergraduate and grad students,
post-docs, faculty and university staff, and I like to
keep my eyes open to the issues facing them, particularly
the women. Personally, I always thought I would follow
in my dad's footsteps and be a biologist myself, but
I had my eyes opened to the realities of life in the labs
in university and decided to take a detour and work in
a somewhat related line of work that isn't so reductionist
and competitive.
My own profession, though, is not without its gender
politics, sharing relatively low salaries for years of
education with other female-dominated professions such as
teaching and nursing. So although I don't share the same
experiences as many of you who have survived the tenure
pressure-cooker, I find the discussions fascinating.
