Postdoctoral Research Associate Position
Department of Biomolecular Sciences

The following position is available in the research group of Dr. Johanna
Avis. State-of-the-art facilities are available within a Department rated
5A in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

Protein-RNA interactions in pre-rRNA processing:
This MRC funded project focuses on carrying out structure-function studies
of the eukaryotic ribonuclease, RNase MRP, a ribonucleoprotein complex
which cleaves at a particular site in pre-rRNA. Studies will aim to map
protein-protein and protein-RNA interactions in this complex and to
investigate recognition of the substrate pre-rRNA. The project will
include recombinant DNA methodology, protein over-expression, RNA
transcription, protein-RNA interaction assays, directed mutagenesis and RNA
modelling. There should also be an opportunity for protein crystallisation
since, ultimately, we are interested in gaining insight into RNA
recognition mechanisms at atomic resolution.
A PhD is essential and experience in some of these areas is desirable. The
scientist appointed will find the environment very supportive, joining a
group currently comprising 3 research students, 3 postdocs and a
technician. It is hoped that they will also relish the opportunity to
explore their own ideas and methodology.
The position is available for just over 3 years, starting October 2000.
Salary on the Research 1A scale (£16,286-£18,915).
Further details of the project can be obtained from Jo Avis (contact
details below) to whom letters of application including a full CV and the
names of at least 2 referees should also be sent (closing date July 23
